lol... so I didn't get to blog all the days of my prac. Here is the basic run-down:
-first week wasn't as good as I thought it would be. For starters... the school isn't all that crash hot. I didn't get to teach many junior classes... taught more senior classes.
-second week didn't get much better... heaps of excursions and stuff meant that classes were cancelled... so I didn't get much practice time.
-third week was surprisingly better. I was able to put into practice all the feedback that my supervisor gave me... and it felt good.
run down of the classes:
yr 7: sucked big time! they were so annoying and teaching keyboard isn't my specialty. So both teacher and students were unmotivated.
yr 8: They were doing group work for the whole time so I didn't get to teach them at all really. I just helped them out. They had to make up music to a television ad for a product of their own choice. We filmed them on the last day of school. Some of them had really good ideas. They are a funny bunch.
yr 9: they were doing group work for most of the time so I didn't formally teach them anything. I had one listening lesson with them... and that went okish. Their assignment was to perform a beatles song. They did really well. It was funny to watch.
yr 10: I probably got closest to this class. I did most of my lessons with them, and I also marked one of their assessments... so that helped in learning their names. At first there were trust issues between me and the students but towards the end we were all friendly and they learned stuff which is always good.
yr 11 music 1: I really liked this class too (all three of them that is). One poor girl was getting all stressed out on her assignment so I helped her nut it out (didn't do it for her... just nudged her along to get started on it). In the end her presentation was really good. I was so proud.
yr 11 music 2: This was a pretty cool class... very quiet though... didn't get to talk to them much because they were doing their compositions. They were so hard working... every free period that they had they were in the music room doing their compositions. At the end of the prac we listened to their compositions and they were so cool. I can still hear that really cool bass line and riff in one of the girl's composition.
yr 12 music 2: It was a bit awkward being in this class because I knew one of the girls from before and one of the other girls was the sister of a guy who is doing music with me at uni. So I just let them call me Caroline... and we talked about studying music in uni and what pieces they were going to play for hsc and my hsc experiences.
so yes... it all ended good.
yesterday I went to Sarah's house for her birthday. We watched the incredibles and the special anniversary performance of les miserables. I really love that musical... I've only seen it done at James Ruse High School... and it was quite well done there. I really wanna see a professional performance of it. That would be so cool. It was a fun night... I love my high school friends. We also played this game called hoopla which is a mix between charades and taboo and pictionary. Very very good!
Jen is going away soon... and I will miss her. She's always there to listen to me.
this week is one of only two weeks that I will have free... and I've already got something booked for every day this week. sigh... holidays too short. I've also got to do all my planning for camps and stuff. Switch camp this weekend and then iscf conference a week later... and I also need to write studies for switch next term. At least it reminds me to read my bible more often.

Prac Day 1
Had my first full day of prac teaching today. I did visit the school for about an hour last friday.
The first part of the day was pretty boring. My supervising teacher was on exam supervision duty, so I followed her and we just walked up and down the aisles of the examination. So yeah... it gets really boring when you are doing it for like 4 hours. So I didn't stay there the whole time. I went to the staff room and looked at the music programmes. There is some good stuff in it. There are a lot of rock music topics as well as your classical/baroque/romantic music components. I copied all the good things that I thought I could use. My supervisor said that she would photocopy the whole programme (yr 7-12) for me.
Then after lunch I went and watched a yr 2 class. The girls were really cute. We sang this little song thing. OMGosh the girls there are so smart! Like they could do rhythmic dictation and sight-sing solfeggio stuff. Then I went and watched a yr 11 class, they were doing a listening task where they listened to a piece and discussed the duration and pitch in it. It was a small class of 3 people. They were good at identifying stuff. Sometimes some of the things they said I wouldn't have even been able to pick out by myself. So that was sorta interesting. My supervisor is really respected there so it's interesting to see how she acts around all the girls. It's a pretty casual feel... I can dig that.
Then we had rock band! It was really fun! There is a vocalist, drummer, violin, electric guitar, electric bass and keyboard. The piece they were doing was "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter. Basically what they do is have a jam session... and then they make suggestions and changes and improvements. It's really casual... and that makes it fun. Some of the girls weren't even music students but they were still really good. Next week I'm going to take the group. I'm trying to think of what song to do with them. I'll have to start listening to 2DAY FM again.
My supervisor was telling me something really funny. You see... she's getting married soon... and the girls at the school have been saying how they think that I am the person that will take over when my supervisor gets married... THEY ACTUALLY THINK I'M A REAL QUALIFIED TEACHER!!! I was quite flattered. So it will be fun teaching them. They think I'm old... yay!
I also found out that my supervisor's fiancee is Mr. Romeo... who did music prac teaching at penno high and taught my class. And he remembers me! How funny! Gosh so many connections.
So yes... I didn't do much... but I'm buggered... I'm going to sleep early. I have to go early tomorrow. Vocal group...
